A local radio station included the song on a compilation tape, and it began to getfrequent airplay. The success of Runaway got Jon noticed, and he realized that he'd need more thansession players if he wanted to capitalize on his success.Jon gave David a call, who in turn tapped Alec John Such, Tico Torres and guitarist RichieSambora. During a show in New York in 1983, the band caught the attention of record executiveDerek Shulman, who signed them to PolyGram.
It was Shulman who anglicized John Bongiovi'sname to Bon Jovi.Commercial SuccessTheir self-titled debut came out on January 21, 1984. Filled with the group's now-signature powerballads underscored by soaring guitar riffs and well-crafted melodies, the album went gold. BonJovi released its follow-up album, 7800 Fahrenheit, in April 1985, which was popular with thefans, but less so with the press. Many critics were turned off by the hard-rock band's manicuredimage and formulaic style. Tours opening for the Scorpions, Kiss and Judas Priest helped Bon Jovibuild up a considerable fan base that appreciated the group's rugged, soulful collection of songsabout how tough it was to be a teenager.
The band responded to tepid critical praise with its thirdalbum, Slippery When Wet, which went gold and platinum simultaneously within six weeks of itsrelease. Powered by songs like Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive, the album sold inexcess of 14 million copies, putting it in the same league as Michael Jackson's Thriller.Solo CareerThe band went into temporary retirement in 1989.
Jon concentrated on his solo career, marriedkarate champion Dorothea Hurley and appeared in his first movie, Young Guns II, for which hewon he won a Golden Globe for Best Song, Blaze of Glory. In 2015, the group debuted BurningBridges (2015), the first Bon Jovi album released after Richie Sambora left.

The organization helps fund "innovative community efforts to break the cycle ofpoverty and homelessness," according to its website30.StingBorn Gordon Matthew Sumner on October 2, 1951, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Sting firstrose to fame as part of the legendary rock group The Police in the1970s and '80s, later making a name for himself as a successfulsolo artist. He earned his unusual nickname from the black andyellow sweater he used to wear during his early days as amusician.The PoliceSting played with several groups before forming The Police with drummer Stewart Copeland andguitarist Henri Padovani in 1977.
Padovani was later replaced by guitarist Andy Summers. Thenew trio released the single "Roxanne" in the spring of 1978, which went nowhere at first. Laterthat year, Sting, Copeland, and Summers traveled around the United States in a van playing smallclubs, such as CBGB's, a punk rock haven in New York City. Interest in their firstalbum Outlandos d'Amour (1978) began to grow and it eventually made on to first the British andthen the American charts.
A re-released "Roxanne" as well as "So Lonely" and "Can't StandLosing You" became popular singles. Sting wrote most of the songs on the album, as he would formost of the group's recordings. Also during this time, he made his first film appearance in musicaldrama Quadrophenia (1978).While often identified as part of the punk and new wave musical scenes, The Police had a soundthat was hard to pin down, filled with many influences from jazz to progressive rock. With itsunique sound, the group continued to attract new fans with its second album Reggatta deBlanc (1979).

ZenyattaMondatta (1980) featured such hits as "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "De Do Do Do, De DaDa Da." The group toured extensively around this time, but still managed to release another albumthe following year. "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" from Ghost in the Machine (1981)reached the top of the charts.Also during this time, Sting tackled his first leading role in the 1982 film Brimstone and Treacle.He even contributed to the score and wrote a song, "Spread a Little Happiness," for the soundtrack,which became a solo hit for him. The Police regrouped for one more studio album,1983's Synchronicity. "Every Breath You Take" climbed to the top of the American and Britishcharts. While many have viewed the song as romantic, it is actually a tale of obsessive love.
Afterthe tour to support this album ended in 1984, Sting decided that the group should take a break.Successful Solo ArtistSting began a career as a solo artist, scoring a hit album with his first post-Police effort, The Dreamof the Blue Turtles, released in 1985. On the recording, he worked with several jazz musicians,including Branford Marsalis.
Sting went on to release a string of successful solo albums,including Nothing Like the Sun (1987), The Soul Cages (1991), Ten Summoner's Tales (1993)and Mercury Falling (1996). During this period, Sting wrote and recorded a diverse range ofmusic, from haunting ballads to intriguing instrumental pieces to upbeat popular songs.
He foundchart success with such singles as "Englishman in New York," "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You"and "Fields of Gold."Along with his musical exploration and experimentation, Sting found time for acting. He appearedin several films, including the science-fiction drama Dune (1984) and the popular British crimefilm Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998). He worked on soundtracks for such filmsas The Mighty(1998), The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) and The Emperor's New Groove(2000).In 1999, Sting released his most popular solo album to date, Brand New Day.
The optimistic titletrack strung a cord with listeners around the world and won Sting a Grammy Award for best malepop vocal performance in 2000. Later albums include All This Time (2001), Sacred Love (2003)and Songs from the Labyrinth (2006), which is a recording of English music from the 1600s.In 2007, Sting surprised and delighted fans of The Police when the group performed together onthe Grammy Awards television broadcast. The band also announced it would tour for the first timein over two decades. He also continued with his solo career, releasing the holiday album If On aWinter's Night in 2009.In 2013, Sting released the album The Last Ship, which drew inspiration from his childhood. Hespent his early years not far from the shipyards of Wallsend, a Newcastle neighborhood.
Singerand actor Jimmy Nail contributed vocals to the album and he also helped Sting develop a musicalbased on the album.Sting made his debut as a Broadway lyricist and composer in October 2014 with the launch of TheLast Ship.
