Here's t h e story ofa Frenchman travelling in t h e United States who, whileeating in a restaurant, wished to order some mushrooms.Unable to make himself understood, he asked for a pen­cil and paper and carefully drew a picture of a mushroom.H i s drawing, however, was not too good, for t h e puzzledwaiter returned in about ten minutes, not with an orderof mushrooms, but with a large man's umbrella.Another similar story concerns two Americans trav­elling in Spain.

They were both unable to speak a wordof Spanish and one day, while eating in a restaurant in asmall village, they were having considerable difficultyin explaining to t h e waiter what they wanted. One ofthem wanted a glass of milk. The waiter seemed unableto understand. Finally, on the back of the menu the mandrew a picture of a cow. The poor waiter, however, stillseemed puzzled.

Finally he left and was gone from therestaurant for half an hour or s o . He returned verypleased w i t h himself. People, who were passing them,dropped coins into the cap.One day, when the weather was very cold, the manwas playing for a long time, but nobody wanted to givehim anything. The poor man thought that he would haveto go to bed without supper.

He was so tired and so weakthat he stopped playing.At the moment a young man came up to him andasked him why he had stopped playing. The blind'mansaid he had played for two hours but nobody had givenhim anything. «Give me your violin. I shall help you*,said the man. And with these words he began to play.He played so well that people began to gather and soonthere was a big crowd. Everybody was eager to listen tothe fine music and to thank the young man for t h epleasure.Once there lived two brothers.

They worked togetheron their father's farm. They were very honest and g o talong together very well. One day their father died leav­ing his property to his two sons. In his last will he toldthem to divide the property between them.But the brothers could not agree now. Each wantedto have the better part for himself. After some t i m ethey even did not speak to each other. At last they w e n tto the judge who was very wise and always knew how tosettle such difficult matters.The judge listenedsaid: «The matter isproperty in this way.way he thinks is bestthe right to chooseprefers*.to them attentively and then hevery simple. «Very well*,said the man, •you may do so. It will be better than theother way*.258Murillo was a great painter in Spain- He painted beau­tiful pictures and he had many students.Once he came to his studio and found a very beautifulpicture there. He asked his s t u d e n t s who had paintedthat picture but nobody answered. Then he asked hisslave Sebastian if he had seen somebody in the studiothe night before. The slave did not answer.

When thenight came and everybody went away Sebastian began topaint. He did not think of the time. Suddenly he heard anoise behind him. When he turned round he saw Murilloand his students watch him quietly.•Sebastian*, cried Murillo, «you are very good paint­er. How did you learn to paint?*«I took my lessons from you, master*, the slave an­swered.•From me? I have never g i v e n y o u l e s s o n s * , saidMurillo.•But you gave lessons to your students, and I heardthem*, answered t h e slave.

Murillo was a v e r y honestwan. He understood that t h e slave was a very giftedpainter, so he g a v e him freedom and began to work withhis •slave* who was not a slave any longer.9"259Приложение 2Английский языкTHE KING AND THE CRITICThere was a king who t h o u g h t that he could paintvery well. H i s pictures were bad, but the people to whomhe showed them were afraid of the king. He turned soldierw h o was standing near him and said:•Take me back to prison*.260A BROKEN VASEOne young man was going to marry a beautiful girl.One day the girl said to him that the next day she wouldcelebrate her birthday and invited him to her birthdayparty.

The y o u n g man was eager to make her a present,so he went to a g i f t shop. There he saw many beautifulthings. Of all t h e t h i n g s he particulars liked the vases.But they were very expensive, and as he had very littlemoney, he had to leave the shop without buying anything.Walking to the door he suddenly heard a noise: one ofthe vases fell on t h e floor and broke to pieces. A brilliantidea came to his mind. He came up to the counter andasked the salesman to wrap up the broken vase he wantedto buy.

The salesman got a little surprised but did whatthe young man had asked him to do.The y o u n g man took t h e parcel and went s t r a i g h t tothe girl's place. By the time he entered t h e room theg u e s t s had already gathered. Everybody was enjoyingthe party. Some of the people were dancing, others weret a l k i n g , j o k i n g and l a u g h i n g . S a y i n g «Мапу happyreturns of the day*, the y o u n g man told the girl that hehad bought a small present for her.

W i t h these words hebegan to unwrap t h e parcel. Suddenly he g o t pale andsaid. «I am afraid, I have broken it.
