How im portant are these thingsin the meetings you attend?5small6relationshipHow im portant do you think theseissues are in your business culture?eInternational meetings can i nvolvepeople from very different cultures.Read the experiences of meetings indifferent cultures on the right andanswer these questions.1 Which would make you feel the most orleast comfortable?2Which feels the most or least familiar?3 Do you recognise any of the styles fromdirect experience?4 Is there anything in your own businessmeeting culture which people from othercultures might find unusual?AWell, in my experience there's great respect forseniority.

Participants will enter a meeting in orderof seniority, with the most senior person sittingfurthest away. The exchange of business cordsis important. They respect silence, as this showsserious work is being done. They do not soy 'no'directly, as this is considered impolite.8 The sort of meetings I attended were very goal·focused and efficient. People there like agendaswhich are clear and they stick to them. They believein good preparation and they feel that meetingsare for clearly defined purposes, with action plansat the end.

There seemed to be a general feeling oftime being precious and not to be wasted. I thinkthey come up with the ideo of business breakfasts. You work for a large multinationalcompany with over 100 officesworldwide (including in your country). The Communications Director hasasked you to discuss the topic ofmeetings across the company and toreport back with your findings. The use of titles like 'Mr' and 'Mrs'is important. There seems to be a lot of handshakingand sometimes kissing on the cheeks. Discussion ismore about process than results, so there may be fewerdecisions or action plans. The timetable is changeable, with interruptions and changes likely. The focus is onestablishing relationships before moving on to the tasks.A business lunch here can lost up to three hours.oI found that people like to know well in advance abouta meeting. They expect an agenda and timetable anddislike alterations. They communicate in a very directway, follow the agenda precisely and minute all items. My jokes didn't seem to make people laugh, so I guessnot being serious is disapproved of.

Any proposals werepresented in detail with supporting evidence. Generally, the meetings were dominated by the senior person.E My experience of meetings here was that they areunstructured and often informal, more like a socialevent. It's normal to have long discussions on otherissues, so it's a good idea to prepare and send out anagenda in advance. There was often careful analysisofsmall details. I found that meetings were more fordecision·makers to get input from participants, whilekey decisions may be made elsewhere.4 OrganisationVOCABU LARY1 Match the verbs (1-6) to the nouns (a-f) to make common collocations.1draw upa) press releases2install and maintainb) contracts3 keepc) research4 traind) systems5 carry oute) records6issuef) staff2Write the name of the activity from Exercise 1 which is typicallyperformed by each of these departments.1R&D2Public Relations3Legal4 IT5Human Resources6 AdministrationNOUNCOMBI NATIONSMatch a noun from column A with a noun from column B to complete each ofthe sentences below.ABconsumerstylesalesheadquartersmanagementrangecompanyrevenueproductawarenesslOur ability to attract top people is a reflection of our .

A majority of Swedes seem content with the prohibitions they believe help keep theircountry one of safest on Earth. As Sweden is extremely child·focused society, much of thepaternalistic protection is directed towards children. For example, all television advertisingaimed at children under age of 12 - from junk food to toys to video games - has beenbanned on terrestrial channels before 9 p.m.

since 1991. Although it has many admirers, ban is not entirely successful because the satellite television stations that broadcastfrom outside Sweden are free to target children as much as they like.
