Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics

The significance of Mathematics in the general system of human knowledge continuously rises. Modern mathematical ideas and methods are becoming more and more necessary for the control of large systems of different kinds: flights of spaceships, industry branches, wide transport systems. Applications of various domains of Mathematics became the part of natural and humanitarian sciences, i.e.: Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Medicine, Linguistics, Economics, Sociology and etc.

Mechanics is one of the main scientific fundaments of the techniques. On the base of theoretical and experimental analysis of phenomena it studies and develops main laws of motion of the bodies, particles, and mass; it studies mechanical properties of various media; it expresses these laws and properties in the form of mathematical formulas; it formulates the most general laws to solve the problems of the motion.

Our Faculty trains specialists of highest qualification in the areas of Mechanics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Our graduates possess deep theoretical knowledge as well as the technique of scientific experiment.

The Division of Mechanics provides a wide range of experimental facilities including different laboratories of the Institute of Mechanics, that has a variety of scientific and educational equipment. It provides the possibility to fulfil the strict modern experiments.

Courses in Mathematics have been delivered since the University foundation in 1755. The Faculty of Mathematics was opened in 1933. It included three divisions: Mathematics, Mechanics and Astronomy. Later the Astronomy Division was transferred to the Department of Physics and the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics had separated from the Faculty.

The names of Moscow University professors in the area of Mathematics D.M.Perevoschikov, N.D.Brashman, P.L.Chebyshev, N.E.Zshukovski, SAChaplygin, N.N.Luzin, P.S.Aleksandrov, A.N.Kolmogorov, S.L.Sobolev, I.G.Petrovski, MALavrentjev, M.V.Keldysh are well known among mathematicians all over the world.

Nowadays the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics is one of the leading scientific centres in the field of Mathematics and Mechanics. About 2,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students study at the Faculty now. The Faculty staff includes 350 professors, associate professors and researchers.
