Gridunova (Russia)PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS OF INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE INSCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTSThe thesis is devoted to the study of intercultural competence (ICC), considered on thebasis of the Dynamic model of intercultural sensitivity (DMIS) proposed by M. Bennett, inrelation to the Five-Factor Model of the personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, opennessto experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness), ethnic attitudes (nationalistic, patriotic, neutral and negativistic) and intellectual development indicators of school and universitystudents.
It is shown that the ethnic attitudes (especially nationalistic) tend to be more related tothe measured ICC scales than the personality traits. The existence of four ICC profiles, thepsychological specificity of which is reflected both in the ratio of orientations to interculturaldifferences (ICC scales) and in the differences between them in personality traits, ethnonational attitudes, and the level of intellectual development, is substantiated and empiricallyconfirmed. On the basis of the obtained results the recommendations for the ICC harmonizationand development are proposed and approved taking into account the psychological peculiaritiesof its realization.
The implementation of these recommendations will contribute to improve theefficiency of activity and communication of school and university students in a multiculturalcontext. The theoretical principles and empirical results of the study can be used in Courses onGeneral Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Ethnic Psychology,Educational Psychology, Differential Psychology, Personality Psychology andPsychodiagnostics.26.
