Published in 1901 and 1902, it originallyappeared in nine monthly instalments in The Strandmagazine. Like Dickens's serialised novels of thesame era, each instalment ended with a suspenseful'cliff-hanger' that kept author Arthur Conan Doyle'saudience clamouring for more.CD In the story, the old and noble Baskervillefamily is threatened by a curse: 'A great, blackbeast, shaped like an enormous wild dog or hound, yet larger than any hound that has ever beenseen' terrorises and kills any family member whocomes to live at the Baskerville estate.
As thestory opens, the hound seems to have claimed itslatest victim, Sir Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles'snephew, Henry, the new heir to the estate, is aboutto take up residence the next day. A friend of thefamily, Dr Mortimer, comes to consult the famousSherlock Holmes in his rooms at 221 b Baker Street, though he admits he doesn't know if the case ismore suitable 'for a detective or a priest' . The firstinstalment of the novel originally ended as DrMortimer explains:W '... One false statement was made by Barrymoreat the inquest. He did not observe any. ButI did - a short distan ce away, but fresh and clear.''Footprints?'' Yes, footprints.''A man's or a woman's?'Dr Mortimer looked strangely at us for aninstant, and his voice sank almost to a whisper as heanswered: 'Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of agigantic hound!'Into this atmosphere of ancient secrets, deadlycurses and supernatural beasts comes the supremelyrational Sherlock Holmes - a man described by hisfriend Watson as 'the most perfect reasoning andobserving machine the world has ever seen' .
Piece bypiece Holmes and Watson solve the mystery and findthe culprit. In the end, they reassure the charactersin the novel (as well as Conan Doyle's Victorianreaders), that behind the threat of a supernatural'hound of hell' is a perfectly scientific explanation.oGrammar Imrelative clausesfilii Match the statements (1-8) with theComplete the sentences with relative clauses uSi.ng theinformation from the box.
