Touse applications remotely requires a lot ofbandwidth, which is only really available froma broadband connection or a leased line to theASP itself.
It is also important to ensure that theASP will be able to provide a secure, reliableservice which will be available whenever youneed it.Providing applications and storage space forvast numbers of users requires some powerfultechnology on the part of the ASP. This includessecurity controls and data storage as well asproviding the physical links to customers. Instead, they leasespace from data storage specialists. Thisis particularly beneficial to small businesseswhich are likely to grow quickly and don't wantto deal with the problems caused byoutgrowing their existing system and having tomove to a high-end package.
ASPs also offer ameans of using specialist tools that wouldotherwise prove prohibitively expensive. Smallbusinesses have the opportunity to use suchtools for short periods of time as and when theyneed them, rather than having to buy thesoftware as a permanent investment.One of the major barriers for small businesseswhich want to make a start in e-commerce isensuring that they have sufficient resources tocope with sudden large increases in customers.This means not only having adequate storagefor all your customers' details, but ensuring thatyou have the technology in place to handlestock levels, efficient delivery and large volumesof traffic. It's very rare for an e-commercebusiness to handle all of these elements byitself, making this one of the best-establishedareas of ASP use.
