English Speaking Countries

The United States proper is situated in the central part of the North American continent. It stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west; from Canada in the north to Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California in the south. The continental USA consists of two highlands and two lowland regions. The highland regions are the Appalachian Mountains in the east and the Cordillera and the Rocky Mountains in the west. Between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains there are the central lowlands called the prairie, and the eastern lowlands, called the Mississippi valley. There are five Great Lakes joined together by short rivers or canals, and the St. Lawrence River joins them to the Atlantic Ocean. The most important American rivers are: the Mississippi, the Missouri.

In general, the climate in North America is much colder than in Europe and the average annual temperature of New York, for example, is 11 degrees by Calcium.

The USA is a federal republic, union of 50 states. There are individual states; each with its own government, there is a federal or national government. The flag of the US is called “Stars and Stripes”. (The 13 stripes represent to original 13^th states; each of the 50 stars represents one of the states). The bold eagle is national symbol of USA. The United States is an indirect democracy. Within the national government, power is divided among three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The legislative branch consists of Congress, which has two parts – the Houses of Representatives and the Senate. The president is the head of the executive branch and the country.
