Dissertation for a scientific degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences, 10.02.15 – general linguistics. – Donetsk National University. – Donetsk, 2007.
The dissertation discloses theoretical problems of substratum study in the works of European (including Ukrainian and Russian) linguists of the XIXth – XXth centuries in the linguistic historiography for the first time. The connection between the substratum theory and the comparative-historical method is proved. The historical-scientific reconstruction made it possible to analyze the theory of language contacts and ethnic influence in the works of comparativists of the 20-s – 60-s of the XIXth century, the views on substratum expressed both by the author of the substratum theory G. I. Ascoli and by European linguists at the end of the XIXth century and the substratum theory evolution in the European linguistics of the first and second half of the XXth century. The contribution of the linguists of the XIXth and XXth centuries to the substratum theory considering the succession and evolution of the views of linguists on different aspects of the substratum theory is revealed. Specific substratum interpretations of historic-linguistic phenomena are analyzed. The assessment of explanatory possibilities of the substratum theory from the position of modern linguistics is provided.
