Visualizing Sound

Author trying to interest its reader starts the article with popular scenarios from the film and saying that the real situation is much worse. The idea is to extract the voice information from video, looking after different object movements. This idea is based on the fact, that “sound waves are just variations in air pressure at certain frequencies”. Researchers in MIT have achieved incredible results. However, they need very good video quality at high speed and good dpi, meaning very big technical requirements? very expensive utilization (meaning data storage and electricity power) and good light source.

The research was started from very noble goal: just looking after the infants using monitors and controlling their breath and pulse, but finally the research grown into the eavesdropping project.

The algorithm must remove noise from the video signal. After it even standard-speed camera video can be used to recognize people’s speech. This can be achieved, because camera makes one video shot row by row, meaning one shot has photo of object at different moment of time. This trick increases the effectiveness by eight or nine times.

There was also work on decreasing the processing time, that is usually measured in tens of minutes. Funny, but as it was found out, it is preferable to use thin objects like popcorn neither ringing objects like bottles of wine.

People also works under different type of voice recognition, like using gyroscope in the phones to turn their movements into speech. Unfortunately, this approach is not good enough to follow an entire conversation, because frequency of human voice and frequency of the object operation is so different. This technology can be easily placed on the people’s phones, because the usually do not require particular permission to use gyroscope.

Another technique for spying after people is laser microphone. The laser is send to some object that vibrates under the human speech and by analyzing laser wave phase it can be computed what the person is saying and even who the person is. These laser technologies allow to listen the target at the distance of several hundred meters. Some people see harmless ways of using this technologies: it can be used to analyze the properties of materials.
