You're stuckin a job you don't like and you want to make achange. One way of making that change is toimprove your marketability to potential employersby upgrading your skill-set. If you're going to trainyourself up however, whose training should youundertake? If you need certificates, whosecertificates should they be? Even if you get thosecertificates, how certain can you be that yoursalary will rise as a result? One solution is therange of certifications on offer from Microsoft.Microsoft offers a large array of certificationprogrammes aimed at anyone from the user of asingle program such as Microsoft Word, tosomeone who wants to become a certifiedsupport engineer. There are a myriad ofcertificates to study for too.
If you're the proudholder of any of those qualifications, then you'reentitled to call yourself a Microsoft CertifiedProfessional (MCP).Once you've decided which track you want totake, you should consider just how qualified youalready are in terms of experience andknowledge. Will you need to go and take somecourses with a training company, or are you thetype who can make good use of self-studymaterials? How much time do you genuinely haveto devote towards this? Will your employer payfor your course? Will it grant you leave to go anddo the course - assuming you can find one - oneither a full-time or part-time basis?The key question here is experience.

If EVAs live up to thedevelopers' claims, they could provide the illusionof personal service without the cost. Call centres,online advertisers and Internet service providersare among the initial targets. Eighty per cent ofcall centre requests could, Stratumsoft argues, bedealt with by an EVA. E-commerce is anotherapplication. 'The best experience you can have as ashopper is personal contact, and EVA is designedto give that', says Stratumsoft's director ofmarketing.The technology behind EVA combines twoglobal trends in website design. One, developedout of the computer animation and gamingindustry, is the ability to give Web images theimpression of three dimensions. The other is theuse of dynamic database skills and artificialintelligence-style searching to retrieve informationfrom data banks.Each EVA can be programmed withinformation such as a product catalogue, answersto frequently asked questions or an onlineencyclopaedia.
It is also equipped with a searchengine to interpret customer requests made incolloquial language. Queries are typed in andanswered via on-screen text boxes.If the EVA does not have an answer, it willinterrogate the questioner, record the response,and add the answer to its database for futureenquiries. EVAs are not fully animated to imitatehuman features but they can be programmed togesture and imitate different moods.
