Saturday Night Thoughts

Now where are my pyjamas?

It's Sunday tomorrow. I usually sit around and do

nothing on Sundays, but tomorrow I'm going to make

a special effort. I'm going to get up early and see

to lots of jobs that I've been meaning to do for ages

but just haven't got round to. First of all, I'm going to dig

the weeds out of the vegetable patch and plant some cabbages

and onions. If I have time after that, I'll mow the front lawn

before lunch. In the afternoon I'm going to polish the car and

give it a service. The car needs a service badly, but I'm not going

to take it to the garage because labour costs are so high nowadays.

There's no point in wasting money, and why pay someone to do

a simple job when it costs you nothing to do it yourself?

I've phoned Ted, and since he's at a loose end tomorrow he'll

come round as soon as he finishes lunch and we'll work on the

car together. We've agreed that he'll help me with my car this week,

and, in turn, I'll go round to his place next Sunday and help him

paint his garage.

Ah well, into bed...

Text Two

The Expert's Fee

Ron: That's the cleaning finished, Ted. It looks almost brand new now.

Ted: Shell we adjust the clutch and check the brakes?

Ron: OK And then I'll change the spark plugs. We won't be long now.

Ted: Will you pass me that spanner, please, Ron? No, not that one.

The big one behind your left foot.

Ron: Here you are.

Ted: Your front tyres are nearly worn out, Ron. Had you noticed?

Ron: No, I hadn't. I'll buy two new ones tomorrow.

Ted: I've checked the oil level - I'll just look at the battery now.

Hmm! There's no water. Shall I fill it up?

Ron: Yes, please. But get a more on, Ted: it's going to rain in a minute.

Ted: Start the engine then, Ron.

Ron: Funny! It won't start. I wonder what's up with it?

Ted: Look, there's Sid Greenham over there. He'll know what's wrong.

Shall I ask him?

Ron: All right.

Ted: Will you come and see what's up with my friend's car, Sid?

We can't make it start.

Sid: I'll put it right for you in a jiffy, but I'm a professional mechanic

and it'll cost you a pound.

Ron: All right, go ahead.

Sid: Just disconnect these two wires, change them around like this and

connect them up again. Now the engine will start with no trouble.

Ron: A pound for that? It only took twenty seconds.

Sid: Ah, but you've paid for what I know, not for what I've done.

The Suspect

Policeman: Good evening, sir. I'd like to ask you a few questions,

if you don't mind.

Suspect: By all means, officer - only too glad to help if I can.

But I know nothing about it.

Policeman: About what?

Suspect: About the murder that someone committed next door two

nights ago, of course.

Policeman: Hm! Did you hear anything unusual that night?

Suspect: Oh, no! I heard nothing at all.

Policeman: Did you see anything out of the ordinary?

Suspect: No, I saw nothing, officer.

Policeman: Did you speak to anybody that evening?

Suspect: No, nobody. I was sitting here watching television.

I was minding my own business.

Policeman: So murder isn't your business, sir? Someone fired six

shots with a revolver, but you heard nothing... A man ran

through that door five minutes after the crime, but you

saw nothing and spoke to no one...Yet you say that you

sat in that chair the whole evening and went nowhere...

It all sound very suspicious to me, sir. Have you anything to add?

Suspect: Nothing at all.

Policeman: Then I have no more questions to ask... but you won't

get away with it.

Suspect: What was that?

Policeman: We shall proceed with our enquiries, sir.

Programme 6

Notes: Forms and Patterns

1 Future tenses: (a) going to (b) shall/will

(a) I'm going to get up early tomorrow. I'm going to cut the hedge.
These are personal intentions, or plans for the future.
It's going to rain. (Look at that cloud!)
That boy is going to fall. (I'm sure he is.)
Certainty about a future event is often expressed with 'going to'.
I'm not going to take it to the garage.
We're not going to pay for it. (We refuse to do so.)
You're not going to bring her, and that's final. (The speaker forbids it.)
'Not going to' often indicates refusal, or, with 'you', prohibition.

(b) I'll come next week. I shall not consider the matter further.
We won't be long now. We shall proceed with our enquiries.
In modern spoken English, 'will', 'll' and 'won't' are used more than
'shall' and 'shan't' after 'I' and 'we'. In more formal English first person
statements, 'shall' and 'shall not' are more frequently used.

He'll do it. (He is willing.)
I'll put it right. We'll help you.
The 'will' future often indicates willingness, a promise or an offer.

It won't start. (It refuses to start.)
We won't pay. They won't help.
'Won't often indicates refusal or unwillingness, after all persons (I, 'he', 'they' etc.)

Shall we adjust the clutch? (Do you think it's a good idea?)
Shall I fill it up? (Do you want me to?)
'Shall' questions, in the first person, are suggestions or offers.
Will you pass me that spanner, please? Will you do me a favour?
'Will you' questions are often polite requests.

If I have time, I'll (I'm going to) mow the lawn.
He'll (he's going to) come round as soon as he finishes lunch.
In the afternoon I'm going to (I'll) polish the car.
In complex sentences, especially after 'if' or a time clause, the 'will'
future is more commonly used; in simple sentences, 'going to' occurs
more often.

He'll remember soon. It'll seem strange.
They'll understand. Be quiet, she'll hear us.
'Going to' is less often found with the special verbs not normally used
in continuous tenses (see Programme I Note 1).

Programme 6

I'll meet him tomorrow. (A new promise.)
I'm going to meet him tomorrow. (As arranged.)
Are you going to have more tea? (Do you intend to?)
Will you have more tea? (I am offering more.)
Why won't he come with us? (Why has he refused?)
Why isn't he going to come with us? (What prevents him?)
Often, the substitution of one form for the other makes a clear difference

to the meaning.
He'll know what's wrong. (X He's going to ... X)
She'll recognise him when she sees him. (X She's going to ... X)
Sometimes the substitution cannot be made.

2 Present tense with future meaning

He'll come round as soon as he finishes lunch. (X... will finish... X)
I'll buy two new ones when I go into town tomorrow. (X... will go ... X)
After a time conjunction - while, when, as soon as, before, after, until, the
moment (that) - the present tense is used to refer to the future.

3 no/none: not any

There's no water in the battery. There isn't any water.
There's none left. There isn't any left.
When 'no' + noun and 'none' (by itself) are used, the verb is without 'not'.
I went nowhere. I didn't go anywhere at all.
I saw nobody (at all). I didn't see anybody at all.
Nowhere, nobody, nothing, no one behave in a similar way. Often - much
depends on intonation
- the 'no/none' forms give stronger emphasis.
Alternatively, emphasis is added by 'at all'.

4 one, ones; it, them; some, any

Pass me that spanner - no, not that one, the big one.
'One', and its plural 'ones', are often used in identifying phrases in place of
countable nouns. Note the different meanings in these pronoun uses:
Those are nice apples. I'd like one. (Any one apple of many.)
That's a nice apple. I'd like it. (The only apple I can see.)
I'd like a red one. (Any of several red apples. Not all are red.)
I'd like two red ones. (Any two from those which are red.)
I'd like the red one. (I can see only one which is red.)
I'd like the red ones. (I want all those which are red.)
We've got some water. Would you like some? (An indefinite quantity.)
Do you want any? I don't want any.
