Service, please

Mike: Mum, I'm in a terrible hurry. Can I have my lunch
right away? We're going to Shaldon for a game of
golf. The boys are picking me up at one o'clock, and
I've promised to be ready on time. Gosh, it's twenty
to one already! Is that clock right?
Mum: No, it's ten minutes fast. It's not quite half past
twelve yet. But it doesn't make any difference - I've
just put our lunch in the oven and it won't be ready
for more than half an hour.
Mike: Mmm! It smells marvellous! Is it ham and egg pie?
I can't wait for that now though. Put some by for
me and I'll have it this evening. What can I have
straight away? I'm starving.
Mum: I can make you a mushroom omelette in five
minutes or you can have what's left of this pork pie.
It looks a bit stale, though - try a bit first.
Mike: It doesn't taste too bad. I'll have this with some
cheese and tomatoes. It's not much of a lunch but
at least I'll be ready in time.
Mum: I'm used to your racing in and out and expecting a 20
meal within five minutes, but this is not a restaurant
with a 24 hour service and I'm not a magician. You
just have to take pot luck, if you can't make your
arrangements in advance and give me some warning
of your movements.

Mike: Well, it's a rotten restaurant and I'm going to
complain to the manager. If I die of food poisoning,
they'll put you in prison for years.

Text Three

The Season of Change

Mrs. Smith: Good evening, Mrs. Jones. It's become quite chilly
all of a sudden, hasn't it?
Mrs. Jones: Yes, I think the summer is over at last and winter's
on the way.
Mrs. Smith: The nights are certainly drawing in. It gets dark soon s
after tea-time now. I suppose we'll be lighting the
fires again in a few weeks.
Mrs. Jones: I'm really looking forward to sitting by a blazing
coal fire again. I don't mind the winter nights as
long as the house is cosy and warm, and I adore the
crisp, fresh autumn air.
Mrs. Smith: So do 1. 1 much prefer autumn and winter to
summer. I can't stand the heat. Do you remember
that heat-wave we had in July? It got so hot that
I couldn't go to sleep at night and the milk turned Is
sour before you could put it in the fridge.
Mrs. Jones: I used to love the summer, but now I'm growing
older f like it less and less.
Mrs. Smith: Well, we're all getting older; there's no doubt about
that. The summers seem to flash past faster and 20
faster every year.
Mrs. Jones: Have you noticed the old oak trees in the lane? The
leaves have turned yellow already. They look quite
beautiful.
Mrs. Smith: When the leaves change colour, everyone says how 25
beautiful they look. My hair was yellow once and
now it's going grey, but no one says it looks
beautiful any more.
Mrs. Jones: Never mind, Mrs. Smith. The trees will be losing
their leaves in a few weeks. At least you aren't going 30
bald.

Programme 10

Notes: Forms and Patterns

1 Informal letter writing: (a) addresses (b) to relatives

(a) Mrs. Ivy Wilkinson, Mr. C. J. Williams,

Ward 3, 35, Manor Rd.,

County Hospital, Harpole,

Royal Ave., Portsmouth,

Birmingham. Hants. (Hampshire)

The destination address appears only on the envelope, usually in the
bottom half, under the name of the person to whom the letter is
written. This address is presented in a similar way to the letter-writer's
own address (see Programme 4 Note 1) but is more likely to use the
following abbreviations:
Rd., (Road,); St., (Street,); Ave., (Avenue,);
Pl., (Place,); Sq., (Square,); Gdns., (Gardens,). Note the full stop used
after the abbreviation, before the usual comma.

(b) When writing to members of our own family, if they are of the same
generation or of a younger generation (brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces,
nephews, sons, daughters), we simply use the first name:
Dear John,
Dear Mary, etc. (X Dear brother John, Dear cousin Mary X).
For parents and grandparents we usually use: Dear Mum, Dad, Grandad,
Grannie, or sometimes Dear Mother, Father, Grandfather, Grandmother;
for uncles and aunts we usually use the first name with Uncle or
Aunt(ie) before it:
Dear Auntie lvy. Dear Uncle Torn.
Such fetters typically end with Lots of love, Love, Much love (for close
relatives);
Yours affectionately (more formal but still close); Best
wishes. Kind regards (dutiful).

2 to + infinitive, to + -ing, you/your etc. -ing

We were sorry to hear that you are back in hospital.
I used to like the summer. I want to go now.
After 'to', the verb form is usually the infinitive, while other prepositions
are usually followed by the -ing form of the verb, e.g.
I'm afraid of flying,
without waiting. He insists on going.

I am used to getting up early.
I am (getting) accustomed to having some free time.
We are looking forward to seeing you.
He doesn't object to going to school.
In these cases, 'to' is followed by a verb in '-ing'.

Programme 10

I'm used to your racing in and out.
I don't object to you smoking. She's tired of him corning in late.
We're used to their complaining about everything.
When the -ing verb concerns somebody other than the first subject, either
the pronoun or name:
you, him, John, or the possessive: your, his, John's,
is used. There is no significant difference, though the possessive is a little
more formal.

3 Adjectives after verbs (a) of the senses (b) of change of state

(a) I feel sure of it. .It sounds serious. (From what I hear.)
It looks stale. (From what I see.) It seems quiet.
He appears happy. It smells marvellous. It tastes good.
Some verbs (like the verb 'to be') are normally followed by an adjective,
not an adverb.
N.B. 'Well' used with these verbs has the meaning 'in good health':

I am very well. He feels well. He looks well.

(b) It has become chilly. It becomes dark.
It has got chilly. It gets dark.
It has turned chilly. It grows dark.
As I get older... The milk turned sour.
As I grow older... The milk went sour.
The leaves turn yellow. I'm going grey/bald.
The leaves go yellow. I'm getting grey/bald.

'Get' + adjective is frequently used instead of 'become' + adjective, and
in addition there are many idiomatic phrases where 'turn', 'grow', 'go'
can be used with a similar meaning.

4 the

John went to school. He is at school. (As a pupil or teacher.)
John went to church. He is at church. (As a worshipper. j
John went to hospital. He is in hospital. (Because he is ill.)
John went to prison. He is in prison. (Because he is a convicted criminal.)
We do not use 'the' in these sentences when John is at the place for the
usual reason, when we use 'the', we mean that he is there for a different
reason.

I go to the school. (To meet my son, not to study.)
We'll come to the hospital. (To see you, not because we are sick.)
I'll go to the church. (To look at it, not to worship.)
He works in the prison. (He is not a criminal.)
