REFERENCE AND APPLICATION DATAHumidity SensorsHIH SeriesHUMIDITY SENSOR CHEMICAL RESISTIVITYHumidity sensors are routinely exposed to chemically activeenvironments in the process of making moisture measurements. Chemical resistivity is an important differentiate betweencompeting sensors and resulting system accuracy and reliability.
To address this, MICRO SWITCH always uses proprietary, chemically resistive and thermally stable thermoset polymer asthe active medium in all of its humidity and moisture sensors. While following data reflects testing on the HIH-3602 sensor, theresults are indicative of all other MICRO SWITCH moisture sensors. Protocols are severe relative to typical applications.LONG TERM VAPOR EXPOSURE PROTOCOL1 For each chemical tested, three HIH-3602 sensors were suspended 0.75 inches above the liquid chemical surface in ahermetically closed flask.1 Periodically, sensors were removed and tested at 0% RH and75.3% RH.Note that an entry of ‘‘F’’ denotes sensor failure.
Blank entriesindicate that the data was not taken.LONG TERM EXPOSURE RESULTSD% RH Change over Exposure TimeSATURATION AND RECOVERY PROTOCOL1 For each chemical tested, seven HIH-3602 sensors calibratedat 0% and 75.3% RH.1 A chemical saturation test was done by placing a drop ofchemical on top of the sensor completely covering the hydrophobic filter for 175 minutes. A blow dryer was then applied toreduce the RH reading from 100% back down to roomambient.1 The sensors were again tested at 0% and 75.3% RH.1 The sensors are next allowed to recover under ambient RH for60 hours.1 The sensors are again tested at 0% and 75.3% RH.ChemicalSATURATION & RECOVERY RESULTSChemicalAlcoholIsopropyl, 66%FFFFFFFAcetoneF*FFFFFFFEthanolFFFFFFFF0.01.50.6−0.7Formaldehydenorm & buff’d0.4Benzene−2.0Toluene−0.43Xylene−1.6330% Benzene +30% Toluene +40% Xylene−03*Sensors are resistant to acetone over shorter exposures.**One sensor failed.+1.83Idophors Solution +0.23Westcodyne+0.16+0.36+0.93Kleenaseptic+3.13+4.5+2.96+4.66QuaternaryAmmoniumVirex 0.2%+0.43+0.2+0.3+0.8SodiumHypochlorite+0.36+0.6+0.43+1.53144F0.8+0.0+0.63100%Formaldehydeneutral soln.+1.13−2.130%AmmoniaHydroxide−17.4+0.1+0.56100%14.5D% at75.3% RHGlutaraldehydeCydex Plus0%Formaldehydehyst.
