ERA OF THE ROCOCOFashion ofthe 18thcentury.by Stepanida Putenko.NOVEMBER. 2020Distinctive featuresof RococoFEATURESThe Rococo style emerged in the 18th century and quicklygained recognition in the cultural world of Europe,dominating architecture, painting, fashion, and even music.The ideal of Rococo was considered an elegant silhouetteand good manners. Movement and gait were developedunder the guidance of teachers of "good manners".
The18th century was called the "gallant age", the age of laceand powder.Narrow shoulders, a very thin waist, a rounded hip line,and a small hairstyle were considered fashionable. Eventhe men's suit looked feminine.02–09Men's suit03–09SHIRTJACKETCULOTTESA mandatory part of the men'saristocratic costume was a snowwhite shirt made of fine linen withpuffy lace cuffs and a slit decoratedwith lace ruffles in the front.Over the shirt, they wore a narrowopen jacket made of bright silk fabricwith needlework with narrow longsleeves. This jacket was fastened infront at the waist to the middle ofthe chest.
In the second half of thecentury, the jacket began to be sewnwithout sleeves, it was called "vest".Men wore "culottes" - narrowtrousers that reached to the knee orslightly below it. The noblessometimes wore white silk stockingsover their culottes, while thebourgeois wore colored stockings. Inwinter, men wore large muffs and"gaiters" - stockings without soles.0102The woman in the Rocococostume looked like aporcelain statuette. Thesilhouette of the suit inbright and light colors wasvery feminine andemphasized the tendernessof fragile shoulders, a thinwaist and rounded hips.Women wore undershirts,corsets, and "figs" — alightweight frame onwhich the skirt lay loosely,falling in wide folds.030405Skirts in dresses shouldbe rather oval, the bodiceis a triangle below thewaist, has a bold neckline.Hairstyles graduallybecome more and more,until they reach incrediblevolumes and turn into realstill lifes on the heads ofwomen.The sleeves of dressesbecome narrower to theelbows.
