Key words are given withcorresponding definitions or presented in such a waythat their meanings can be easily deduced from thecontext.The theme can be presented orally and you can askstudents to contribute any relevant vocabulary thatthey may already have. Alternatively, and particularlyfor larger groups, ask students to study this section inadvance.

Draw attention to the words highlighted inthe Key vocabulary section by, for example, writingthem on the board. Check students' comprehension ofthese words before going any further into the unit. Youmay wish to give students the relevant photocopiablekey vocabulary exercise available on pages 66-73, oryou may prefer to use this towards the end of the unitto ensure that the most important vocabulary has beenassimilated before moving on to the next unit.Lead-inThe Lead-in section encourages students to reflect onthe unit topic. It can take various forms, from listeningexercises to speaking activities that involve either pairwork or discussion.

Invite students to contribute anyrelevant personal experience or knowledge they mayalready have. Details on how to exploit this materialare provided within the Teacher's Book.viReadingEach reading passage is taken from a British, Irish orAmerican newspaper, business publication or companyliterature. While some of these texts provide anoverview of the subject of the unit, others have beenchosen because they present the people or issuesinvolved from an individual perspective. The passages,which vary in length and degree of difficulty, caneither be read in class or prepared beforehand.

Checkcomprehension using the exercises that follow;including activities such as true/false, multiple choiceand grid completion.VocabularyTwo or three vocabulary exercises follow the readingpassage. The first one or two test students'comprehension of topic-related vocabulary items takenfrom the passage through a variety of tasks, includingmatching definitions, finding synonyms or antonyms,word building and crossword puzzles.

The last exerciseactivates this vocabulary by providing a differentcontext in which students can demonstrate that theyare able to use the new words. Students are encouragedto use an English-English dictionaryDiscussionAll units provide activities to stimulate discussion, butsome contain special discussion sections to encouragethe class as a whole to express ideas and opinionsrelated to the theme of the reading passage.

In someunits a series of questions acts as a stimulus, while inothers students are asked to comment on documents,information or case studies.Language FocusNew Insights into Business contains a standard syllabusof grammatical structures that intermediate and upperintermediate students should already have masteredbut which, in practice, often need to be revised.

TheLanguage Focus section deals with one or more of thesestructures and encourages students to consider thesegrammar points in a business context. The Practicesection allows students to consolidate their knowledge.Comprehensive explanations of all these structures aregiven in the Grammar Reference section at the back ofthe Student's Book. Additional exercises in some unitsfocus on certain problem areas of grammar whichappeared in the earlier reading passage.

All theexamples are based on factual information taken froma variety of sources that will enhance students'knowledge of the general topic of the unit. Thegrammar exercises lend themselves well to use ashomework assignments which can then be correctedin class.Introduction ■Skills FocusSpeakingTo develop the four skills of reading, writing, listeningand speaking, each unit contains activities which setpractical tasks and encourage students to providecreative solutions to authentic business problems.These enable students to consolidate and apply theknowledge they built up while working through theunit.

In keeping with the overall philosophy of NewInsights into Business, these activities incorporateauthentic materials provided by professionalorganisations. Full instructions can be found under therelevant headings in each unit of the Teacher's Book.Speaking with confidence and using an appropriatestyle is essential to good business practice. Proficiencyin spoken English is developed using different andoften interrelated stages which combine role-play andsmall group discussions. The objectives of the role-playactivities are to develop specific skills such asinterviewing, making and replying to enquiries, askingfor and giving advice, etc.

Common expressions aresuggested where appropriate. The small groupdiscussions concentrate on providing students with acontext in which they can express their own ideasmore freely. Often a final speaking activity allows theclass as a whole to compare and evaluate the workdone in small groups.ReadingReading materials include fact files, case studies,promotional materials and questionnaires. Thesedocuments require detailed study as students will needto refer to them and exploit their content during thesubsequent stages of the Skills Focus. When adocument contains a potential problem area, theTeacher's Book includes a full explanation.WritingThe writing tasks are designed mainly to introducestudents to the most common forms of businesscorrespondence (memos, letters, e-mails, reports, etc).Students are given the chance to express their personalviews in other types of writing assignments.ListeningIn addition to the listening passages which may formpart of a Lead-in, each unit includes a separatelistening section where students will hear extracts frominterviews, monologues and scripted dialogues.

Theseinterviews have been prepared with companyrepresentatives and other personnel specialising in eachof the fifteen areas covered during the course. In thisway, students have direct contact with businessprofessionals who have invaluable insights based onpersonal experience and first-hand knowledge. Thelistening tasks have been devised to draw attention tothis aspect rather than exploit only grammatical andlexical content. It should be noted that the majority ofthe interviews are authentic and were recorded withnative and non-native speakers of English rather thanactors. They therefore contain the hesitations,rephrasing and unconventional syntax which are afeature of natural speech. The dialogues providepractice in functional language and serve as modelsthat students can use to prepare their speakingactivities. The Teacher's Book gives clear guidance onhow to use the listening materials, together withcomplete tapescripts.Photocopiable materialMany sections in the Student's Book can be made morevivid and challenging by providing students with extramaterial, for example gap-filling exercises based on thekey vocabulary, models for writing activities andadditional background information for role-play andgroup work situations.

You will find these materials onpages 66-99 and you are free to photocopy them.
