Mathematics and Mechanics Department

Nowadays there arc many Universities in Russia. But not all Universities are equal. They differ from one another in history, tradition, and academic organization. Moscow Lomonosov University founded in 1755 is the first and the largest world-famous University for its academic excellence in Russia. The University consists of Faculties and Departments of Natural Sciences, Law, Economics, Informatics, Arts (Humanities), etc. Following a particular programme students are to attend series of lecture courses which may last one academic, term or the whole year. Associated with each lecture course are seminars and lab practice classes which illustrate the topics presented in the lectures.

Russians place a high value on education at MLU Mathematics and Mechanics Department. The factors determining the Department image and prestige are:

1. the top quality of the teaching faculty;

2. quality of research facilities;

3. the number and competence of applicants for admission.

Admission to the Department is by tough competitive examinations. The Department teaches in all major subject branches of Modern Mathematics. The faculty staff members are experts in their professional fields. The teaching encourages students to learn Mathematics and Mechanics in the most effective way.

Their have been two principal divisions at the Department - Mathematics and Mechanics which are closely interrelated and interconnected. There has appeared a third division of late (=recently) - Mathematical Economy. The Department was not unique in following tins expansion trend. Modem Mathematics researched full momentum soon after twentieth century. Industrial, economic, and military demands began to draw many established pure mathematics specialists and many younger ones just starting their careers away from academic life.

New fields of mathematics such as Linear Programming, Operation Research, Game Theory, Information Theory, Numerical Analysis, Probability and Statistics, Measure Theory, Set Theory, Mathematical Logic and their applications accelerated new mathematical inventions and theories. The inevitable result was the opening of new fields of mathematics (at present there exist more than 90!) and the increase of the number of professional mathematics. No doubt, no expert in any new field of mathematics is able to solve a particular “applied” problem without through and wide knowledge and mastery of “pure” mathematics fundamental means techniques, rigorous mathematical reasoning and insight. The change of occupation, goals and mentality of many pure mathematics specialists led to a new “management function”. Professionals in pure mathematics have often become “Managers” of production, economics, finance, marketing, personnel and the like.

MLU Mathematics and Mechanics Department teaches students willing to specialize in any new fields such as marketing research, industrial economics, personnel psychology, industrial sociology and similar applied sentific disciplins. The Department teaching provides mathematical and scientific methods of solving rahter varied and broad problems in pure science and engineering, business, governmental defence. Any appleant for a job in these areas should display knowledge of computer science and computer skill and fluent English besides his graduation Department Diploma. So English classes are as important and compulsory as mathematics and related science lectures and seminars at the Department, The problem of learning English is especially urgent today. English has become the language of the world. English is not only the national language of Great Britain the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Over 300 million people speak it as a mother tongue. Nowadays English is the international language of communication in such areas as science, technology, business, education, political organization, etc. Learning English, riding books in the original, listening to the ВВС news students learn the culture and history of the native speakers countries. One must work hard lo learn English.
