Expand the Help listing in the left pane ofthe Preferences dialog box and select the Fonts item. The Help FontsPreferences panel appears.Help Navigator FontUse Help Navigator font preferences to specify the characteristics of the fontin the Help Navigator. For example, specify a smaller font size for the HelpNavigator to see more information without scrolling.Select Use desktop font if you want the font in the Help Navigator to be thesame as that specified under General - Font & Colors.
If you want the Help4-24Preferences for the Help BrowserNavigator font to be different, select Use custom font and specify the fontcharacteristics for the Help Navigator:• Type, for example, SansSerif• Style, for example, bold• Size in points, for example, 12 pointsAfter you make a selection, the Sample area shows how the font will look.HTML Browser FontSpecify the font type and size used in the display pane for Fixed width andProportional width fonts. In MathWorks documentation, most of the textuses proportional-width fonts. A fixed-width font is used for code examples,function names, and system input and output, as shown in this example.t = 0:pi/20:2*pi;y = exp(sin(t));plotyy(t,y,t,y,'plot','stem')To easily distinguish code, function names, and system input and output fromsurrounding text in the documentation, specify a different font for fixed widththan for proportional width.4-254Getting HelpPrinting DocumentationYou can print the current page displayed in the Help browser, or can print apage to an entire book from the PDF version of the documentation.
If you wishto purchase printed documentation, see the online store at the MathWorksWeb site at http://www.mathworks.com.Printing a Page from the Help BrowserTo print the page currently shown in the Help browser, select the print buttonfrom the display pane toolbar, or select Print from the File menu. The Printdialog box appears. Complete the dialog box and press OK to print the page.Printing the PDF Version of DocumentationIf you need to print only a few pages and if the quality does not need to beequivalent to pages in a printed book, you can print directly from the MATLABHelp browser – see “Printing Pages” on page 4-19.If you need to print more than a few pages of documentation, or if you need thepages to appear as if they came from a printed book, print the PDF version ofthe documentation.
PDF documentation is shown and printed using your PDFreader, Adobe Acrobat Reader. The PDF documentation reproduces the lookand feel of the printed book, complete with fonts, graphics, formatting, andimages. In the PDF document, use links from the table of contents, index, orwithin the document to go directly to the page of interest.To print a PDF version of documentation:1 For Windows systems only, insert the documentation CD provided withMATLAB into your CD-ROM drive. PDF files are on the CD and are notinstalled on your system.
(For UNIX systems, the PDF files are installed).Ifyou have problems, check the Help preferences – see “DocumentationLocation – Specifying the help Directory” on page 4-22.2 In the Help browser, go to the Contents tab and select the title (first entry)for a product.The Roadmap page opens for that product, providing links to keydocumentation for that product.4-26Printing Documentation3 On the bottom of the Roadmap page, listed under Printing theDocumentation, is a link for printing. Click that link.If there is only one manual for the product, Acrobat Reader opens,displaying the table of contents and first page of the manual.If there is more than one item you can print for the product, a page listingthe choices appears.
Select the item you want to print. Acrobat Readeropens, displaying the documentation.If you have problems, check the Help preferences – see “PDF Reader –Specifying Its Location” on page 4-23.4 To print the documentation, select Print from the File menu in Acrobat.4-274Getting HelpUsing Help FunctionsThere are several help functions that provide different forms of help than theHelp browser, or provide alternative ways to access help.4-28FunctionDescriptiondocDisplays the reference page for the specified function inthe Help browser, providing syntax, a description,examples, and links to related functions.docoptFor UNIX platforms that do not support Java GUIs, usedocopt to specify the location of help files.helpDisplays M-file help (a description and syntax) in theCommand Window for the specified function.helpbrowserOpens the Help browser, the MATLAB interface foraccessing documentation.helpdeskOpens the Help browser.
In previous releases, helpdeskdisplayed the Help Desk, which was the precursor to theHelp browser. In a future release, the helpdesk functionwill be phased out.helpwinDisplays in the Help browser a list of all functions,providing access to M-file help for the functions.lookforDisplays in the Command Window a list and briefdescription for all functions whose brief descriptionincludes the specified keyword.webOpens the specified URL in the specified Web browser,with the default being the MATLAB Help browser.
You canuse the web function in your own M-files to displaydocumentation.Using Help FunctionsViewing Function Reference Pages – the docFunctionTo view the reference page for a function in the Help browser, use doc. This islike using the Help browser search feature, with Search type set to Functionname. For example, typedoc formatto view the reference page for the format function.Overloaded FunctionsWhen a function name is used in multiple products, it is said to be anoverloaded function.
The doc function displays the reference page for the firstfunction with that name found on the path, and lists the overloaded functionsin the Command Window. To get help for an overloaded function, specify thename of the directory containing the function you want the reference page for,followed by the function name.
For example, to display the reference page forthe set function in the Database Toolbox, typedoc database/setGetting Help in the Command Window – the helpFunctionTo quickly view a brief description and syntax for a function in the CommandWindow, use the help function. For example, typinghelp bardisplays a description and syntax for the bar function in the CommandWindow. This is called the M-file help. For other arguments you can supply, seethe reference page for help.If you need more information than the help function provides, use the docfunction, which displays the reference page in the Help browser.
It can includecolor, images, links, and more extensive examples than the M-file help. Forexample, typingdoc bardisplays the reference page for the bar function in the Help browser.4-294Getting HelpNote M-file help displayed in the Command Window uses all uppercasecharacters for the function and variable names to make them stand out fromthe rest of the text. When typing function names, however, use lowercasecharacters. Some functions for interfacing to Java do use mixed case; theM-file help accurately reflects that and you should use mixed case whentyping them.Overloaded FunctionsWhen a function name is used in multiple products, it is said to be anoverloaded function. The help function displays M-file help for the firstfunction with that name found on the path, and lists the overloaded functionsat the end.
To get help for an overloaded function, specify the name of thedirectory containing the function you want help for, followed by the functionname. You will encounter some methods in thecourse of using a product, such as entries in the Help menu, Help buttons indialog boxes, and selecting Help from a context menu. These methods alldisplay context-sensitive help in the Help browser. Other methods for gettinghelp, such as pressing the F1 key, are described in the documentation for theproduct or tool that uses the method.Running DemosMany products include demos that show the key features. It’s often helpful torun demos when you first use a product.
