Specifications of micro econometric models that consider cognitive socialcapital (trust) in the analysis of corruption expectations are suggested. Empiricalestimates on Russian data showed that, unlike corruption models based on the costsand benefits theory, as well as the results obtained in the macro data analysis, anindividual’s income (usually considered in theoretical models as a budgetconstraint) has little effect on her decision to give a bribe, and the key factors areinstitutional — in particular, a significant relationship has been identified betweentrust and the level of corruption perceptions at the individual level.3.
Based on the suggested method of empirical analysis of the spread ofcorruption expectations about indicators of structural social capital (networks) inthe absence of dynamic (in time) observations on the network, it was demonstratedthat an individual’s environment has a significant impact on her attitude tocorruption. Therefore, including social capital in microeconomic analysis is usefulto study the spread of corruption expectations. This method can also be applied tothe analysis of other forms of deviant behavior and other phenomena experiencingpeer group effects.Contribution1. In this research the hypotheses on the relationship between corruptionexpectations, social capital and trust are formulated and tested using the suggestedcomplex of mathematical and analytical methods.2. Nonparametric analysis of data by countries and applying newspecifications of regression models, considering social capital, allowed to explain12the difference in corruption perceptions by historical, economic and institutionalfactors.3.
Micro data analysis of corruption perceptions using new specifications ofregression models with social capital revealed the relationship between corruptionperceptions and social capital.4. Applying the suggested mathematical method of estimation, the peergroup effect based on the system of equations in the absence of dynamic dataallowed to consider the measure of influence of social capital on the diffusion ofcorruption expectations.List of author’s original articles:1.
