TheADAM-5000 system has some built-in features that help you quicklyidentify problems.1-4ADAM-50002Installation GuidelineInstallation Guideline2.1GeneralEnvironmental SpecificationsThe following table lists the environmental specifications that generally apply to the ADAM-5000 system (System kernel andI/O modules).SpecificationRatingStorage temperature-13 to 185°F (-25 to 85°C)Ambient operatingtemperature14 to 158°F (-10 to 70°C)Ambient humidity*5 to 95%, non-condensingAtmosphereNo corrosive gases* Equipment will operate below 30% humidity.
However, staticelectricity problems occur much more frequently at lower humiditylevels. Make sure you take adequate precautions before you touchthe equipment. Consider using ground straps, antistatic floor coverings, etc. if you use the equipment in low humidity environments.Power RequirementsAlthough the ADAM-5000 systems are designed for standardindustrial unregulated 24 VDC power supply, they accept any powerunit that supplies within the range of +10 to +30VDC. The power supplyripple must be limited to 100 mV peak-to-peak, and the immediate ripplevoltage should be maintained between +10 and +30 VDC.Diagnostic IndicatorsDiagnostic indicators are located on the front panel of the ADAMsystem.
They show both normal operation and system status in yourremote I/O system. The indicators are:• System status (PWR, RUN)• Communication status (TX, RX)• I/O module status2-2ADAM-5000Chapter 2A complete description of the diagnostic indicators and how to usethem for troubleshooting is explained in Chapter 7.Figure 2-1 ADAM-5000 Diagnostic indicatorsSetting the Network Address SwitchSet the network address using the 8-pin DIP switch. Valid settingsrange from 0 to 255 (00h to FFh) where ON in any of the 8 DIP switchpositions equates to a binary 1, and OFF equates to a binary 0.Note: 00h is special for initial setting. If 00h is setting by user, the baudrate setting will be fixed to 9600 bps.
It is recommand to setting the rangefrom 1 to 255 (01h to FFh).ADAM-50002-3Installation GuidelineFigure 2-2 ADAM-5000 Network address DIP switchDimensions and Weights (ADAM-5000)The following diagrams show the dimensions of the system unit andan I/O unit of the ADAM-5000. Pushthe module straight into the system until it is firmly seated in thebackplane connector.
Once the module is inserted into the system, push in the retaining clips (located at the top and bottom of themodule) to firmly secure the module to the system.Figure 2-3 Module alignment and installation2.3I/O Slots and I/O Channel NumberingThe ADAM-5000/485 system each provides 4 slots for use with I/Omodules. The I/O slots are numbered 0 thru 3, and the channel numberingof any I/O module in any slot starts from 0.
The ADAM-5000E systemeach provides 8 slots for use with I/O modules. The slots are numbered0 thru 7. For example, ADAM-5017 is a 8-channel analog input module, its channel numbering is 0 thru 7.2-6ADAM-5000Chapter 22.4MountingThe ADAM-5000 system can be installed on a panel or DIN rail.Panel MountingMount the system on the panel horizontally to provide proper ventilation. You cannot mount the system vertically, upside down or on a flathorizontal surface.
A standard #7 tating screw (4mm diameter) shouldbe used.Figure 2-4 ADAM-5000 Panel mountingADAM-50002-7Installation GuidelineDIN Rail MountingThe system can also be secured to the cabinet by using mountingrails. If you mount the system on a rail, you should also considerusing end brackets on each end of the rail.
The end brackets helpkeep the system from sliding horizontally along the rail. This helpsminimize the possibility of accidentally pulling the wiring loose. If youexamine the bottom of the system, you will notice two small retainingclips. To secure the system to a DIN rail, place the system onto the railand gently push up on the retaining clips. The clips lock the systemon the rail.
To remove the system, pull down on the retaining clips, liftup on the base slightly, and pull it away from the rail.Retaining ClipsFigure 2-5 ADAM-5000 Rail mounting2-8ADAM-5000Chapter 2Figure 2-6 ADAM-5000E Rail mounting2.5Wiring and ConnectionsThis section provides basic information on wiring the power supplyand I/O units, and on connecting the network.DC Power Supply Unit WiringBe sure that the DC power supply voltage remains within the allowedfluctuation range of between 10 to 30 VDC.
Terminals +VS and GND arefor power supply wiring.Note: The wire(s) used should be at least 2mm2.ADAM-50002-9Installation GuidelineINIT* is used for changing baud rate and checksum. COM is providedas reference to the RS-485 ground signal. DATA+ and DATA- areprovided for the RS-485 twisted pair connection.Figure 2-7 ADAM-5000 Wiring and connectionsI/O Modules WiringThe system uses plug-in screw terminal blocks for the interfacebetween I/O module and field devices. The following information mustbe considered when connecting electrical devices to I/O modules.1.
The terminal block accepts 0.5 mm2 to 2.5 mm2 wires2. Always use a continuous length of wire, do not combinewires to attain needed length3. Use the shortest possible wire length4. Use the wire trays for routing where possible2-10ADAM-5000Chapter 25. Avoid running wires near high energy wiring6. Avoid running input wiring in close proximity to outputwiring where possible7. Avoid creating sharp bends in the wiresRS-485 Port ConnectionThere is a pair of DB9 ports in the ADAM-5000 system.
The ports aredesigned to link the RS-485 through a cable to a network in a system. The pin assignment of the port is as follows:Pin No.DescriptionPin 1RS-485 Data -Pin 2RS-485 Data +Pin 3Not UsedPin 4Not UsedPin 5RS-485 Signal GroundPin 6Not UsedPin 7Not UsedPin 8Not UsedPin 9Not UsedNote:ADAM-5000The wiring of the RS-485 should be through a twistedpair.
