In 1999, women represented nearly 51% of the total U.S. population and 46% of the workforce. The participation rate of women in the American workforce was the highest in the world. These figures show that the gap between men and women is narrowing in the corporate world. However, large disparities in salary still remain between men and women. For example, only 4% of female homeowners compared to 11% of their male counterparts earned as much as $85,000 a year. In 1999, 9.4 million women held executive, administrative and managerial positions. The smaller the business, the lower the percentage of women involved in decision making. Outside of agriculture, women-owned businesses represented only 1/4 of all businesses in the U.S.
