Numerals in English
Theory (Теоретический материал):
Numbers are important because we need them to count things, tell time, talk about money, and many other activities. In English, numbers come in two main types: cardinals and ordinals.
Cardinal Numbers
Cardinal numbers answer the question "How many?" These are regular counting numbers.
Examples: One (1)
Two (2)
Three (3)
Four (4)
Five (5)
Six (6)
Seven (7)
Eight (8)
Nine (9)
Ten (10)
We also have big numbers like twenty (20), thirty (30), forty (40), fifty (50), sixty (60), seventy (70), eighty (80), ninety (90).
And then there are hundreds, thousands, millions, billions, etc.: Hundred (100)
Thousand (1,000)
Million (1,000,000)
Billion (1,000,000,000)
When writing bigger numbers, remember to separate each group of three digits by commas.
Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers show position or order. We use them to say which one comes
first, second, third, fourth, etc.
Examples:
First (1st) Second (2nd) Third (3rd) Fourth (4th) Fifth (5th) Sixth (6th) Seventh (7th) Eighth (8th) Ninth (9th) Tenth (10th)
After ten, most ordinal numbers follow a pattern where "-th" is added to the number:
Eleventh (11th) Twelfth (12th) Thirteenth (13th) Fourteenth (14th) Fifteenth (15th) And so on...
Special cases include twentieth (20th), thirtieth (30th), fiftieth (50th), sixtieth (60th), seventieth (70th), eightieth (80th), ninetieth (90th).
For higher numbers, write out the whole word followed by "-th": Hundredth (100th)
Thousandth (1,000th) Millionth (1,000,000th)
Additional Tips
- Remember to always separate large numbers into groups of three digits with commas.
- Pay close attention to the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers— cardinal numbers give amounts while ordinal numbers provide positions.
