Both countrieswanted to be the firstto develop this type of aircraft so they signed theAnglo-FrenchSupersonicAircraft Agreementto buitdthe Concorde.The Americansalso tried to developasimilar jet during the 1960s.However,people fromenvironmental groups really didn't like the noisepollution, damageto the atmosphereand the costs ofa project of this type, which were very high.

The U.S.congressfinally decidedto stop giving money for anAmericansupersonicpassengerjet in 1971.By this time, the British and Frenchhad completedthe Concordebut it was very disappointing. In the1960s,people thought that supersonicflying was thefuture of commercialair-travel, nearly all the biggestairlines wanted to buy this plane. Therewere ordersfor more than 270 of the jets, but high petrol costsand problemswith environmental groups reducedthe number of orders.The Concordewas finallyonly bought by two airlines - Air Franceand BritishAirways.

The production of the plane ended in 1'979and only L6 concordeswere ever made.However,the Concordewas still a great achievementof designand engineeringwith a top speedof 1",490mph (2,385 khp) and a normal flying speedof 1,354mph (2,165kph). It flew at 60,000feet (18,300m).itcould fly a distanceof 3,740 miles (nearly 6000 km)and it was poweredby four very large engines.Therewere nine people working on it and it could carry100 passengers.The plane was extremelypowerfulpassengersfirst-timewere surprisedby thebutsmooth and comfortabteride.For nearly 25 years,the Concordeenjoyedlots ofsuccessand flew to such destinationsas Japan, aswell as offering a famous trip round the world in1986,which cost $20,800per person.It could crossthe Atlantic 0cean in about three and a half hours,less than hatf the time of regular aeroplanes.Theplane was very popular with cetebrities,sports starsand rich people.Unfortunately, there was a terrible accident in which113 peoplewere killed.
