They packed their car withthree suitcases and set off from their home earlyin the morning. The weather was warm and, asthey drove across the Swiss border into Italy, theylowered the roof and enjoyed the pleasant sensationof the warm spring air rushing past their heads.By the middle of the afternoon they had reachedMilan.

Kirsten wasn't very good at map-reading butshe was sure they could make their way to the centreof the city, find a parking space and enjoy a deliciouslate lunch at a local restaurant. As they drove intoone of the city's quiet suburbs they suddenly hearda loud bang and felt something crash into the backof their car. Turning around they saw a smallmotorbike lying on its side behind their car with twoyoung men sprawled on the road beside it. Dieterstopped the car and jumped out to see if he couldhelp. One of the young men was groaning loudly.Kirsten knew how to give first aid so she opened herdoor and approached the groaning man. Suddenlythe two men jumped up and rushed towards thecar. In less than two seconds they had leapt into thecar and driven off at high speed, leaving Dieter andKirsten standing in the street.Dieter started shouting for help in German.

Butthere was no one around to hear him. At firstKirsten wasn't too worried. She couldn't speakItalian either, but she was sure they'd manage tofind a police station nearby. After half an hour ofwalking they had still failed to find a police officeror anyone to help them and they began to get moreworried. Their passports, credit cards, mobilephones and money had all been in the car andDieter was worried that the thieves might be usinghis credit cards to go on a massive spending spree.About 20 minutes later they saw a police car drivingalong the street and they rushed into the road to flagit down. Dieter tried to explain what had happenedto the police officer. But the officer couldn'tunderstand German and decided to take the twoIISwiss tourists back to the police station.

He was sureone of his colleagues would be able to translate forthem. Unfortunately as he was driving back to thepolice station there was an emergency call on hisradio and he was instructed to drive to the scene ofa serious accident. Dieter and Kirsten were forcedto sit in th e back of the police car for another twohours while the officer dealt with the emergency.By the time they arrived at the local police stationit was eight o'clock in the evening and they wereexhausted.

Using the police station's phone, Dietersucceeded in contacting his credit card company tocancel his cards. Once they'd done this they decidedthe best thing was to get home as quickly as possible.A police officer drove them to the railway stationand lent them the money to buy two tickets. Theyjust managed to catch the last train - the slowovernight service back home.Relieved to be on their way home, the couple soonfell asleep. They woke at seven in the morning asthe train pulled into the station.
