The investment bank yesterday released its ninth feng shui index which each year examines how the relationship between wind and water will affect the market in theYear of the Dragon beginning on February 5. "We are looking at a fairly volatileyear," said Dio Wong, CLSA's head of research. The findings have some overlapwith the investment house's fundamental analysis on the market which suggests arally in the fourth quarter after the peak of the interest rates cycle. Yet the feng shuiforecasters can see through the choppy trading to predict a key turning point in theYear of the Dragon will be in May, the month of the snake. "The dragon and thesnake get along very well," CLSA investment analyst Anthony Wu said.
The element of fire is expected to be strong during this month, which will represent a rallyin technology counters. Momentum will be strong as liquidity - represented by water - will flow into the market. The good feng shui will start to dissipate over thenext few months, with August - the month of the monkey - being an uneasy timefor investors. "The market will start off the month appearing strong, but the positive elements will turn out to be only monkey business and the market will end themonth by falling out of its tree," the report said.
And things will get worse, as inOctober - the month of the dog - we are advised to "expect a massive consolidation, even though speculative stories will prove to be little more than howling atthe moon". The end of the year is expected to be much stronger, driven by returning liquidity, although in December - the month of the rat - investors are warned tobe cautious over several high-technology stocks.
CLSA's feng shui experts boastedabout the accuracy of last year's predictions of relative swings of the Hang Seng195Index but there was one crucial caveat about the timing. "Last year's prediction wasnigh on perfect - that is if you played each twist and turn two months early," according to the report.EXERCISESExercise 1Find in the text words similar in meaning to the following:an act of returning to a former good state after difficulties or recession; to beknown and printed; quickly changing, unpredictable situation; a method of arranging things or business, in order to bring good luck, success and wealth; the percentage amount charged for borrowing money by the big banks; money- earning activity that causes trouble; a statement or warning intended to prevent misunderstanding; to happen to be, or to be found to be in the end; to cause to disappear; tocover partly or to go beyond something; a company whose main business is to buythe shares of other companies purely for investment purposes.Exercise 2Explain in other words the following phrases.1.Feng shui forecasters can see through the choppy trading to predict akey turning point in the Year of the Dragon will be in May.2.The market will start off the month appearing strong, but the positiveelements will turn out to be only monkey business and the market will end themonth by falling out of its tree.3.And things will get worse, as in October - the month of the dog - weare advised to "expect a massive consolidation, even though speculative storieswill prove to be little more than howling at the moon.4.Last year's prediction was nigh on perfect - that is if you played eachtwist and turn two months early.Exercise 3Find in the text the English equivalents for the following Russian words andphrases.196Нестабильная ситуация на рынке; инвестиционный фонд; устойчивыйрост; результаты исследования совпадают с результатами анализа; процентная ставка; компания, занимающаяся сбытом высокотехнологичной продукции; оказаться бессмысленным/ прибыльным предприятием; быть осторожным; использовать любую возможность.Exercise 4Answer the following questions:1.What are the main characteristics of the year of the Dragon?2.When according to feng shui forecasters the key turning point in thebusiness year of the Dragon is going to happen?3.In your opinion what are main characteristics of the month of theSnake?4.When according to feng shui experts the business year of the Dragonis going to slump?5.What do you think are the distinctive features of the month of theMonkey and the month of the Dog?Text 2AN INVESTOR DIARYMultiplying profits offer big carrot as dragon's year looms K.L.
