There is also a dental clinic sharing the building with the students' one.Medical services are given only under themedical insurance sertificates, which can be purchased at university clinics.LIBRARYTFA C U LT Y O F P H Y S I C SA N D M O S C O W S TAT EUNIVERSITYhe major MSU library, called Gorky library, wasestablished in 1755, and nowadays containsover 8 million of volumes, two million of which arebooks in foreign languages.

The Gorky library is thethird largest library among Russian public libraries.The Faculty of Physics hosts its own library,which is the chapter of the Gorky library. It is located inthe main building of the faculty and serves over 4.5thousand customers annually. The library offers textbooks, thesis, monographs, and scientific journals.In a few last years, the library offers to thefaculty's customers online access to some key journals (published by American Physical Society,Springer, Elsevier, etc.).RECREATION AND SPORTING FACILITIESLomonosov Moscow State University is the university number one in Russia. It is governed byits own charter and funded directly by the RussianGovernment. Nowadays, the Moscow State consistsof 27 humanity and natural sciences faculties(Faculty of Physics, inclusive), 11 research institutes,18 research centers, 4 museums, the Gorky library,publishing and printing houses.

It has also fourbranches — in Puschino and Chernogolovka (both inMoscow region), in Sevastopol (the Ukraine, at theBlack sea shore), and in Astana (Kazakhstan). MSUpossesses of more that 600 buildings in Moscow andin other regions (in Crimea and the White Sea, forinstance).Being the largest University in Russia, theMoscow State has overall more than 40,000 students, 8,500 faculty members and scientists (6,900of them hold PhD or DrSc degrees). A quarter of allfundamental research in Russia is being conductedat Moscow State University.The number of foreign students at MoscowState exceeds 4,000 from 97 countries.DORMITORIESStudents have a choice of dorm according totheir financial conditions.

They may reside inthe Main Building Dorm (single rooms) or share theroom by two or even three students at any of the fivedifferent dorms located in the vicinity of the Universitycampus.For convenience, on campus there are alsomore than 20 canteens, many small restaurants,cafeterias, snackbars, various kinds of service(postal office, recreational facilities, cinema, internetcafee, etc.).MEDICAL SERVICEMedical services at Moscow State Universityis arranged through a few clinics for students and the faculty.

In case of emergency, the qualified doctors can provide firstaid help and then aF A C U L T YO FP H Y S I C S•M .V .All students at Moscow State (except disablestudents) must undergo physical trainingcourses, which are the part of the curriculum.Besides that, all students can join any of the numerous MSU sport club sections. The sporting facilitiesinclude 12 gyms, two swimming pools, a number ofstadiums, a baseball field, a tennis court, and manyothers.Also, the University offers to the studentsextended recreational facilities outside Moscow, inthe Moscow region and at the Black Sea, where students can improve their health and relax during winter or summer vacations.THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW CAMPUSInJanuary 2005, Moscow State will celebrateits 250th anniversary.

Approaching this date,a construction of a new campus of the university atthe territory adjacent to the existing territory ofMoscow State at Vorob'evy Gory — was started in2004, which should result in a few years from now indoubling the territory and capacity of the university'scampus.By January 2005, this new campus will hosta new building of the University's FundamentalLibrary, and the construction of a number of educational and research facilities is also under way. It isalso planned that a new university medical centre willbe open there.

It should become the clinical base forthe Faculty of Fundamental Medicine allowingresearch in topical areas of modern medicine, like celland gene therapy.RUSSIAN LANGUAGETeaching at M.V.Lomonosov Moscow StateUniversity is conducted in Russian.
