If you are a current SAS user, then you might alreadyhave a SAS profile. If you are a new SAS user, then a SAS profile is created for youwhen you register for SAS OnDemand for Academics.An important part of your SAS profile account is a SAS profile password that you areprompted to enter each time you access the SAS OnDemand for Academics ControlCenter.Note: Your SAS profile password must be changed every 6 months for securitypurposes. The server (which is hosted at SAS Institute Inc.) remotelyprocesses any submitted SAS files or projects and returns results to your computer.If you are unable to use a SAS OnDemand for Academics software application toperform processing, then make sure that you have a working Internet connection.52Step 4. Review the Basics for Working with Data and ResultsChapter 5If your Internet connection is working normally, then you can check the SAS serverstatus web page at https://www.ondemand.sas.com/status/oda/ to determine whetherappropriate servers are available or temporarily down for maintenance.Avoid Connection Time-outsAvoid leaving open connections on the server. An open connection to the SAS server andthe SAS Web Editor expires after one hour (or less) if the connection is idle (that is, youhave not performed any processing).

Many firewalls disconnect open sessions after anhour of idle time (or less). It is best practice to complete your work, save it, and then exitSAS OnDemand for Academics: Web Editor before you leave the computer.SAS Server Maintenance and AvailabilitySAS makes its best efforts to make the server available as much as possible and to keepunexpected downtime to a minimum.

There could be limited times when the server isunavailable because SAS is performing maintenance, testing, or performanceenhancement tasks.If server maintenance is needed, then SAS will try to perform this work duringnontraditional usage hours to lessen any impact to users.SAS uses the third Saturday of each month to perform scheduled maintenance onits systems (if needed). Youcan access the data using a LIBNAME or FILENAME statement that yourinstructor provides you.Instructors or students can store the data that they want to use on a data sourcethat can connect to their PC. Sources could include a local file system, universityspace (such as AFS or NFS space), or portable disk drives.Accessing Data Using SAS OnDemand for Academics: Web EditorThe SAS server includes sample SAS data sets that you might choose to use.

Inaddition, if course files and SAS data sets have been uploaded to the SAS server, thenyou can access these SAS data sets as well. To access the SAS data sets:1Log on to the SAS Web Editor using your user ID and password.2Open or create a new project.3Select Libraries in the navigation pane.4Double click the appropriate library (such as MAPS, SASHELP, or the librarythat you have assigned using a LIBNAME statement).5Double click the SAS data set that you want to use.Note: If you modify a SAS data set that exists on the SAS server and you want to savethat SAS data set, then you must download the data set to a local drive.
