It is but natural that itwill be quite difficult to communicate with the Britons without knowingand understanding the background and cultural content of their country. For example, many students still confuse such notions as England,Great Britain and The United Kingdom. However, for the British, allthree names have their specific meaning and geographical, historical andeconomic connotations.5The full name of the country is the United Kingdom of GreatBritain and Northern Ireland.
The UK consists of four parts: England,Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The island of Great Britainconsists of three main parts: England (the southern and middle part of theisland), Wales (a mountainous peninsula in the West) and Scotland (thenorthern part of the island). The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is madeup of three crosses.
The upright Red Cross is the cross of St. George, thepatron saint of England. The white diagonal cross is the cross of St.Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the crossof St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.CHAPTER I GEOGRAHPY AND CLIMATERead the vocabulary:Magna Charta-Великая Хартия Вольностейprecipitation- осадкиAn heir- наследникhostilities - враждебностьMeadows- лугheath- местность, поросшая верескомThe United Kingdom is situated on the group of islands lying just offthe mainland of north-western Europe.
The British Isles include GreatBritain, Ireland and a number of smaller islands. The island of GreatBritain consists of three main parts: England (the southern and middlepart of the island), Wales (a mountainous peninsula in the West) andScotland (the northern part of the island). Northern Ireland occupies onethird of the island of Ireland.
It borders on the Irish Republic in the south. The British Isles are surrounded by the Irish Sea and the North Sea, theNorwegian Sea, the North Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. Owing to theshape of the country, any point in Great Britain is no more than 70 milesfrom the sea.The total area of the British Isles is 325 000 square km. According toscience the British Isles used to form a part of the continent. The rockyhighlands of Scotland, for example, resemble the Norwegian coast. Theevidence that the islands were the part of the continent is the shallownessof the English Channel between them and the mainland.
There are nohigh mountains in Great Britain. In the north the Cheviots separateEngland from Scotland, the Pennies stretch down North England along itsmiddle, the Cambrian Mountains occupy the greater part of Wales. TheHighlands of Scotland are the tallest of the British mountains. There isvery little flat country except in the region known as East Anglia. Most ofthe rivers flow into the North Sea. The Thames is the deepest and the6longest of the British rivers. Some of the British greatest ports aresituated in the estuaries of the Thames, Mersey, Trent, Tyne, Clyde andBristol Avon.
Although Great Britain is not very rich in mineralresources; it is a highly developed industrial and economic country. It isknown as one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of iron andsteel products, machinery and electronics, chemicals and textile, aircraftand navigation equipment. One of the chief industries of the country isshipbuilding. Out of 57 million people only 7 per cent of her populationis engaged in farming. The largest cities of Great Britain are: London, Birmingham, Glasgow,Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Leeds, Edinburgh, Belfast andCardiff.London, the capital of the United Kingdom is the capital of Englandand Great Britain, of course. It was founded by the Romans in 43 A.D.and called Londinium.
In 61 A.D. the town was burnt down and when itwas rebuilt by the Romans it was surrounded by a wall. That area withinthe wall is now called the City of London. It is London's commercial andbusiness and financial centre. It contains the Bank of England, the StockExchange and the head offices of numerous companies and corporations. There is a very popular saying “When a man is tired of London, he istired of life!” There are hundreds of historic buildings, galleries andmagnificent museums in London.
The most famous of these areWestminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament,Buckingham Palace…Here is situated the Tower of London, which wasbuilt by William the Conqueror in 1066. He was crowned at WestminsterAbbey. During the Tudor period (l6th century) the Londoners of theElizabethan period built the first theatres. Nowadays the theatre land isstretched around Piccadilly Circus.
Not far from it one can see the BritishMuseum and the Covent Garden Opera House. During the Victorianperiod in the 19th century London was one of the most important centersof the Industrial Revolution and the centre of the British Empire.Like many other big capitals, London is always changing.
