This increasebrings problems:road accidents, congestion, andpollution. However, engineers are working onAdvanced safety vehicles (ASVs)which will be muchsafer for drivers, other road users such as cyclists, andfor pedestrians. They are also working on new engineswhich use cleaner fuels.ASVs will be equipped with electronic sensorstoprevent accidents and to make it safer for people whenaccidents do happen. One sensor will stop the driverfalling asleep.
Others will warn drivers when they aretoo closeto other vehicles. The car of the future might be electric. Electric motorsare very efficient and produce no pollution, but theyneed heavy batteries and their range is limited withcurrenttechnology. Hybrid cars have both a petrolengine and an electric motor. They save about t5%offuel. They need batteries but they don't have to becharged overnight as the motor acts as a generatorwhen the car brakes.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)isalready used as a fuel. Cars can be converted easily butLPG only cuts down pollution a little. Hydrogen fuelcells may be the long-term answer. They provide cleanpower but each cell is very expensÍve.Gadget boxThewotld'sfir;t hyrlrogen-powcredmotorbikccan reach8 0 k p h i n l 2 s e c o n d sl t.
